Census Forms showing up

The 2010 Census Questionaire is arriving at Virginia households now through March 17th.  Officials ask you to watch for the 10-question form, fill it out and mail it back immediately in the envelope provided.  This is the easiest way to participate in the census.

Hamner Theater in Nellysford

ArtJam

Blues in Lynchburg

American Naïve Paintings at the Taubman

A new exhibit, American Naïve Paintings from the Garbisch Collection will be on display at Roanoke’s Taubman Museum, running through May 16.  Portraits, landscapes, maritime scenes, and other subjects depicted in simple, direct vitality with vivid colors and designs make this exhibition a real treat.  (Kimberly S. Maple Syrup Festival in Highland County

Highland County, “Virginia’s Switzerland”, will celebrate the 52nd Annual Maple Festival March 20-21.  Visitors can observe the full process of making maple syrup, from tapping to table, and attend arts and crafts shows, bluegrass music, clogging, and other activities.  (540 468-2550, www.highlandcounty.org)

“Ivy Rowe” --- a one-woman show

“Ivy Rowe”, a one-woman play based on Lee Smith’s novel FAIR AND TENDER LADIES, will be staged tonight, at the Chapel of All Faiths on the UVa Wise campus at 7:30 pm.  The play features actress Barbara Bates Smith, and is a part of MINDS WIDE OPEN: Women in the Arts.  (276 376-4520) 

Pianist in Charlottesville

The Tuesday Evening Concert Series presents world-famous pianist Christian Zacharias (zack-ah-REE-ahss) in recital tomorrow, March 16th, at 8 pm in Cabell Hall Auditorium on the UVa campus.  The program contains music by Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert.  (www.tecs.org)

Music at St. Andrews

Harlem Ambassadors Basketball

Banff Mountain Film Festival

The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour returns to the Lyric Theater in Blacksburg, Wednesday, March 17th at 7 pm.  Films capture the spirit of outdoor adventure from around the world, with proceeds benefiting the Appalachian Trail Conservancy regional headquarters in Blacksburg.  Tickets and information at thelyric.com or brms.com.

Moscow Festival Ballet in Charlottesville

Organ Recital in Staunton

Organist David Yearsley will perform at Trinity Epicopal Church in Staunton on Friday, March 19th, at 7:30 pm, as part of the 30th anniversary season of Mary Baldwin College’s Carl Broman concert series.  Yearsley is a professor of musicology and performance at Cornell University, and his program will include music by Handel.  The concert is free of charge and a nursery will be provided.  (540 886-9132)

CASA 20th Anniversary Celebration

UVa Jazz Ensemble

Traditional Indian music meets Jazz

A rare but upcoming genre of music will be featured in concert on Friday, March 20th, Indian classical fusion.  Traditional carnatic music from India is performed on jazz guitar with bass and drum backing, in a performance co-sponsored by Virginia Tech’s Indian Student Association and featuring guitarist/composer Prasana.  The concert will be held at the Haymarket Theater  at Virginia Tech on the 20th, starting at 6 pm.  Admission is free.  (chaitanyachopra@gmail.com)

Zephyrus to Perform des Prez

The Vocal ensemble Zephyrus (ZEF-ir-uss) will perform works by Renaissance composer Josquin des Prez (JOS-kwahn dez PRAYS) on Sunday, March 21st, at 3:30 pm at the st. Note-able Revolutions: Spirit

The University of Virginia Chamber Music Series continues with Note-Able Revolutions, a recital featuring faculty members Ayn Balija, viola, and I-Jen Fang, percussion, performing music by Rebecca Clarke, Zae Munn, Judith Shatin, and others.  They will be joined by guest artist Alicja Basinska in Old Cabell Hall on Sunday, March 21st, at 3:30 pm.

Relay for Life fund raiser

Theatre at Washington does Bach

Jim Lehrer at VMI

Kenyan Filmmaker at Tech

Kenyan filmmaker Patrick Mureithi will hold a public screening and discussion of his new documentary ICYIZERE: HOPE, a film dealing with trauma, reconciliation, and forgiveness following the genocide in Rwanda.  The screening will take place on Tuesday, March 23rd, atg 7 pm in Colonia Hall in the Squires Student Center at Virginia Tech.  The screening is free and open to the public.  (Betty Fine, 540 231-9593)

Leadership – Marshall Foundation

Battle of the Bands

Men Who Cook!

Art Exhibits at W&L in Lexington

The Williams School of Commerce, Economics and Politics at Washington and Lee in Lexington supports the display of art in public places. To that end, the Williams Gallery presents an exhibit titled Inside Out, paintings by Kathleen Olson through June 30, and Off the Bridge, recent oils and watercolors by Janet Niewald will be on display in the McCarthy Gallery through June 15. Admission to both exhibits is free.
